The
Union Cooperative Society is a member-owned organisation that aims to
improve the social and economic well being of its members and their
community.
It was
formed in 1965 to protect the incomes of workers from rising prices by
providing goods and services at the lowest possible cost. While
the Cooperative still owns and operates a service station in Moranbah,
generally it has largely moved out of retail and is now a financial
organisation that astutely cares for members' financial interests.
It also supports working peoples' organisations and communities in many
other ways, and is currently investigating ways it can help further
develop the communities in both Brisbane and Moranbah.
The
Cooperative owns the Brisbane Workers Community Centre, the Moranbah
service station, the 2 Latrobe and 301 Given Commercial centres and some
residential units in Paddington. It currently has over $7 million
in investment properties, members' deposits, reserve funds and
debentures.
